The Characteristics of the Korean Traditional Dream Interpretation(¥°)

Abstract
The dream materials from the Korean historical literatures werc investigated in order to elucidate the characteristics of the historical dreams in contents and functions, the Korean traditional attitude toward dream and the way of dream interpretation.
Dreams of prospective nature were predominating, in which the supernatural beings appeared and gave advises or warnings to the dreamers pointing out their future events. A large numbers of birth dreams were included in dreams before Koryo dynasty. Rebirth motifs were seen not infrequently which closely related to the Buddhistic transmigrationism. The ability of dream to forecast one¢¥s future occurrences through symbolic images without direct information by the supernatural beings in the dream were abundantly demonstrated. The coincidence of dream with external events and the simultaneous dreaming of same contort in different person and in different place was frequently told. This synchronicity phenomenon was theoretically supported by Yi Ik, a Confucian scholar of Chosun dynasty who attributed it to Gui Mae¢¥s (3k,(8-) action and resonance of Ching-shen. The dream not rarely showed to elicit dreamer¢¥s religious atonement and some healing dreams through Epiphany were also reported.
The dream images are highly mythical when regarded from the viewpoint of the present time and these have been interpreted according to the traditionally determined symbolic system which was quite concrete and stereotypic. Clang association and analogy of dream images from Chinese characters was applied in some cases of dream interpretations. In this material the dream interpretation in regard of physical states were rarely seen, though Dongui Bogam, the Korean handbook of medicine from Aliddle Age has mentioned the dream¢¥s diagnostic meanings with recommendation of remedies for soothing the nightmare.
Within the scope of dream materials reviewed in this article it was suggested that tl-e dream has been regarded throughout the Korean history as a highly purposeful event. However, there was always, even in the Three Kingdoms Period, voices which warned one¢¥s lighthearted clinging to the omen of dream. The possibility of multiple meanings of a dream was also suggested and the dream interpretation in exclusively negative way was dissuaded, for the destructive suggestive power of such interpretation might discourage the dreamer.
